Thank you so much for inviting me to the 2013 Food Allergy Bloggers Conference. You have an amazing line-up of speakers and topics, and I’m beyond excited to attend!

I’m Rebecca Sherrow, the voice behind Pure and Peanut Free. It’s my goal, through the blog, to inspire others to “Live Beautifully (with food allergies).” This is easier said than done! With all the processed food out there, with allergens hiding in unexpected places, and inconsistent (and often inaccurate labeling), the supermarket is literal mine field of reactions waiting to happen. Pure and Peanut Free is a place to escape the chaos. It’s where I share my original recipes for unprocessed, pure food made with simple, wholesome ingredients. I strive to write recipes that are both classy and sophisticated while at the same time accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Of course, everything is always peanut and tree nut free.

Which panel topic do you look forward to hearing most and why? Do I have to pick just one?! I’m looking forward to them all, but the one I’m just dying to hear is Self-Publishing. I’m nearly finished with my first cookbook and weighing the options of self-publishing vs. finding a publisher. It’s a little — no, A LOT — overwhelming! I’m also looking forward to Nitty Gritty ~ Make it Pretty!, as I’m technologically challenged when it comes to coding, creating buttons, and pretty much everything that’s not written in plain English.

What is the best thing about food allergies? When I tell people the story of my daughter’s anaphylactic reaction, I think most people tend to feel sorry for her. They say things like, Oh, that must be terrible for you!, or Poor thing!, or, my favorite: What dose she eat?! (Don’t you just love that one?) What I try to explain to these people is, this is our way of life. It’s not a burden. We don’t sit and wallow in our own misfortune. She hasn’t known any different. My children’s food allergies have forced me out of my comfort zone, and inspired my creativity in the kitchen. They keep me on my toes, ever asking for safe versions of things they find in the supermarket. It’s led us on a journey of exploration into international foods that are both safe and delicious. And the fact that I know every single ingredient in the food I make, and therefore every ingredient that is going into my kids’ little bodies, is extremely rewarding! We live a beautiful life, full of travel and adventure, and safe food, in spite of their food allergies, and I hope to show others how to live this way, as well.

What motivated you to start blogging about food allergies? As a parent of young children with newly diagnosed food allergies, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information on the internet. I started the blog as a way provide some logical order to what I was finding, and, hopefully, to catalogue it to share with other parents who were in the same boat. I was determined to have my children live full and active lives. As the years went on, and because of my love of cooking, Pure and Peanut Free took on a life of its own as a food and recipe website. I began converting our favorite nut-filled recipes into safe alternatives (such as these Thai Sunflower Noodles– my take on Thai peanut noodles). I love to play in the kitchen and develop my own recipes which I share along with some old family favorites. It’s also a place where I share moments of our journey on this uncertain and often scary path, with the hope of providing encouragement and inspiration for others on the same difficult road.
