Greetings! We are getting ready to start planning the 5th annual Food Allergy Bloggers Conference, and wanted to share some details with you!
The Conference will be held November 3, 4, and 5, 2017 at the Renaissance Hotel in Denver again this year.  The Expo will be open to attendees on Friday 1-5 pm and Saturday opening at 9am, and closing at 3pm. There will not be an Expo on Sunday, however, you are welcome and encouraged to stay to attend sessions and network more if you so desire.

2016 Blogger Help Desk

This year’s help desk will be on Friday from 1-6pm in the Expo. Please fill out our Appointments sign up to reserve your evaluation and meeting time with Mary Fran Wiley, who will be offering her experience and advice to help take your blog to the next level. Mary Fran can’t provide tech support for Blogger or WordPress.com blogs, but she can answer general questions. She’ll probably spend an hour or two on each registrants blog evaluation to make sure that everyone who has an appointment gets something actionable.

We will have a set number of technical appointments that you can sign up for in advance. Every pre-scheduled appointment will receive an evaluation and suggestions based on:

  • Page Speed
  • Social media setup (rich pins/recipe markup, images set up for social sharing)
  • 508 compliance (contrast, alt text, keyboard navigation, images not replacing text)
  • UX personas*
  • Userflow/call to action evaluations.

Missy will be sharing the wonders of Snapchat, how you can use it to share more of your personality and behind-the-scenes blog content. Rivka will be making sure you don’t get lost on Facebook and show you how Facebook live can bring you more loyal followers, and how Facebook Instant Articles will change how you blog – for the better! You’ll have a chance to instantly apply what you’ve learned in this workshop setting, while having Missy and Rivka there to hold your hand every step of the way!

Bring your smartphone to this session with Snapchat already installed and follow along as Missy walks us through how to use Snapchat. You’ll learn how to:

  • Navigate the app,
  • Add friends by username, snapcode or nearby,
  • Use stickers,
  • Draw,
  • Use filters, overlays and lenses,
  • Protect your privacy or open up to all,
  • Explore Discover and Live, Stories,
  • Use chat and video chat features with friends,

2015 Open Call for Speakers

We are beginning to plan for the third annual Food Allergy Bloggers Conference. As part of this we must organize the agenda and speakers for #FABlogCon 2015.  The Call for Speakers and Ideas will be open for 4 weeks, closing on January 20th, 2015.  We look forward to creating another memorable conference, strengthening our friendships, support networks, and making new connections!

We thank you for your interest in becoming a presenting speaker at the third annual Food Allergy Bloggers Conference, November 13-15, 2015.

*Please note: No prior speaking experience is necessary for consideration. Submission of form does not guarantee acceptance. All entries will be reviewed and selected participants will be contacted regarding interest and availability in participating. If you are submitting as a single speaker, please be aware we may add complementary speakers to a panel for a rounded out presentation. We only have select number of open topics available, and will chose those we find with widest appeal, importance of topic, and strong or original content. We will keep submission ideas for future conference planning if unable to use all this year as there are only so many agenda sessions available.  Further, be advised that we do not pay speaker fees though speakers do receive free conference attendance ticket.

We will review all submissions and notify you via email by February 15, 2015 if your proposal moves to the next phase of planning.

#FABlogCon 2015 Sneak Peek Details!

We are actively working on  plans for the next Food Allergy Bloggers Conference, and we think you will be excited by what’s in store for 2015!

#FABlogCon 2015 will be held November 13-15, in Denver Colorado. Registration details, Eventbright ticket sales and Sponsorship information will be released in the next few weeks. The event will be held at the Denver Renaissance Hotel, (near the old Stapleton Airport)-

Based on the survey results you filled out after the 2014 event, and in consideration of the 2013 results as well, the 2015 conference will be moving to a new city, and a SMOKE FREE hotel! We have taken into consideration aspects from our event in Vegas that made the conference easy for our guests and our sponsors. We know that safe food is imperative, but we also need to accommodate attendees with asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other related issues. Plans will be put in place to make sure that we accommodate everyone.  The Denver Renaissance will be offering us comparable block room rates, and they offer complimentary shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport (or it’s only a $35 cab fare).

We fully realize the importance of getting the food “right” (SAFE!) – so with that in mind we will be hiring Chef Keith Norman to help with both the menu creation as well as coming to the new site to do staff training prior to the 2015 conference date; to ensure the safety of our guests and their dietary restrictions. The Denver Renaissance is looking forward to partnering and eager to host our event! We are so excited to be bringing our Food Allergy Bloggers Conference to the Mile High City!

GUEST POST: Danya Glabau
This fall, Danya will be attending the Food Allergy Bloggers Conference in Las Vegas, NV, September 26-28. She is thrilled to attend this conference, where she’ll get to meet some of the biggest stars in the food allergy blogging community! Some of you may know her from her blog, Allergy and the City, and from Twitter (@allergyPhD) as that PhD student who is studying the “culture” of food allergies in the United States. For those who don’t (or for those who are wondering why she chose this topic), she wanted to provide a brief introduction to who she is and what she’ll be doing at the conference.

FABC: Please tell us a bit about who you are and your research.

Danya: I’ll wear many hats at the conference: I am a PhD student in an interdisciplinary social science field called Science and Technology Studies (STS) where I am training to be an anthropologist specializing in medical and scientific cultures; I am a writer of scholarly papers, an unfinished dissertation, and a blog about my ongoing research on allergies; and I am an allergy sufferer whose unfinished allergy diagnosis journey began in adulthood. For my dissertation research, I am talking to the people who live with allergies and the allergists who treat them to collect personal and professional stories about how allergy management works in the real world. I’m also attending conferences, visiting medical offices, and following scientific research on allergies to get an idea of popular strategies and medical best practices. Ultimately I want to know the how – what are the techniques people use, and how do they learn about them? – and the why – what societal values shape the options and choices available for allergy management? – behind these everyday strategies.

FABC: You also are a blogger, and allergy sufferer, so I expect this will be personal for you as well.

Danya: Blogs are, as you all know, a very important source of information about food allergy. Reading food allergy blogs has taught me a lot about how people manage their allergies. I’m psyched to get to know many of the bloggers that I read on a regular basis. At the Food Allergy Bloggers Conference, I’ll be attending lectures and panels to learn more about the people behind the words. I’ll also be striking up conversations with those of you who might be interested in sharing more details about your allergy journey with me. I’m excited to learn more about how personal experience with food allergies has inspired the wide variety of writing and advocacy work that I’m already familiar with – as well as the projects that I will find out about for the first time in Las Vegas!

Open Breakout Sessions:

This year we are having a series of mini-breakout sessions for our attendees, as an ice-breaker & for special interests. We have 15 breakout sessions that will be going on from 9-10 AM on Saturday morning September 27.  Many of these sessions will require participants to pre-register as space will be limited. We will be posting about these in upcoming posts. Today I want to share the 3 sessions that are open to anyone to attend without requiring pre-registration.

Blog to Book: Meet an Editor and Learn About Publishing, from Concept to Completion:

For many bloggers who have spent months or years creating recipes, writing about food and restricted diets, learning food photography, and promoting their work, a book is the natural next step. Whether you choose to self publish or work with a publishing house, you want your book to be the best it can be—and I’d love to help. I’m an Associate Editor at The Experiment, an independent publishing company with a strong track record publishing health- and food-focused books (including Colette Martin’s Learning to Bake Allergen-Free and forthcoming The Allergy-Free Pantry). There, I work with authors (many of whom are also bloggers) during all stages of the editorial process, from brainstorming a concept to developing a table of contents to fine-tuning sentences and checking facts to “packaging” the book with the perfect title and cover. Depending on what questions the group has, I would be happy to provide general editorial advice, discuss the publishing process and expand upon the relative merits of independent or “Big Six” publishers versus self-publishing.

Breakout Session LeaderMolly Cavanaugh is Associate Editor at The Experiment (Twitter @experimentbooks), an independent nonfiction publishing company in New York City, where she edits a variety of special diet books, including Colette Martin’s Learning to Bake Allergen-Free and forthcoming The Allergy-Free Pantry, Kelli and Peter Bronskis’ gluten-free cookbooks, and books on the low-FODMAP diet written by leading experts Sue Shepherd and Peter Gibson. Molly herself has celiac disease—diagnosed in 2013, after she saw her own symptoms described in the books she worked on—and blogs about it at Based on a Sprue Story (Twitter @spruestory). She grew up in Massachusetts, attended college in Chicago, and now happily cooks and eats gluten-free in Manhattan.

 Like a good pair of jeans, reliable online information about health can be hard to find. With information and misinformation about food allergies abounding online, how can readers know what’s fact and what’s fiction? Before you hit the “publish” button on your next post, join our conversation about how to ensure that your blog is providing recommendations and facts supported by scientific research and health data. FARE staff members Veronica LaFemina and Anna Luke, along with Food Allergy Sleuth blogger Jessica Martin and Asthma Allergies Children Co-Author, Henry Ehrlich, will give you advice on how to identify reliable research you can use to make your blog a reputable source for your readers.

Henry Ehrlich
Henry Ehrlich is co-author of Asthma Allergies Children: a parent’s guide with Dr. Lawrence Chairamonte and Dr. Paul Ehrlich, board-certified pediatric allergists, and editor of AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com, which they founded in tandem with publication of the book because “medicine moves faster than print.”  A former corporate speechwriter, Henry has also published books on speechwriting, adoption, sleep medicine (co-author), business quotations, and edited Children’s Allergies and Asthma: one of nature’s dirty tricks, an anthology of 89 original pieces from the website.  He is currently writing a book on the work of Dr. Xiu-Min Li to cure food allergies and asthma by integrating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and cutting-edge medical science.

Jessica Martin, PhD
Jessica Martin earned a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Oregon Health and Science University in 2011. She is currently a faculty member in biology at Portland Community College, where she enjoys teaching undergraduate students enrolled in general biology, cell biology, and anatomy & physiology.  True to her passion for teaching, Jessica also educates on the science behind food allergies on her blog, the Food Allergy Sleuth.  She takes pride in breaking down complex scientific findings to make them understandable for all whose lives are affected by allergies.  Outside of her blog, Jessica’s writing has appeared at Asthma Allergies Children and Slate.  Jessica is also involved with the Oregon Food Allergy Network, supporting advocacy efforts to adopt statewide policies for food allergies in schools. Jessica is the mother of two young boys, one of whom has multiple life-threatening food allergies.

Anna Luke
Anna Luke is the manager of online community at Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), where she runs the organization’s blog and social media platforms, contributes to the development of new programs and website content, issues allergy alerts and ingredient notices, and manages FARE’s Food Allergy Awareness Week initiatives. Anna came to FARE from an education reform nonprofit so she could work on an issue close to her heart: helping families and individuals living with life-threatening food allergies, just like her mother and sister. On the personal side, Anna was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2007 and blogs about all things gluten free in her blog, Gluten Free? Gimme Three! She also is a contributing blogger for The DC Ladies, focusing on gluten free restaurants and news for women in the DC metro area. Veronica LaFemina
Veronica LaFemina is the vice president of communications at Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), where she leads the organization’s efforts to increase awareness of food allergy as a serious and growing public health issue. For the past decade, she has directed national strategic communications initiatives designed to garner attention for important health issues, including food allergy, HIV/AIDS, mental health, and the health of veterans and their caregivers. Veronica launched her first health-related blog in 2005 and has been passionate about making health research and information easier to understand, access and share by leveraging social media and other online platforms ever since. Having grown up in a food allergy family, she is also committed to helping all those who are managing the disease have the information and resources they need to stay safe and live well with food allergies.  You’ve developed your platform, found your voice, and honed your writing skills.  What’s next?  Join a lively discussion about ways to reposition your ideas, voice and material and GET PAID, too. We’ll talk about pitching a story and about approaching the right outlets for your work.  Beth Hillson is food editor at Gluten Free & More (formerly Living Without magazine) and a freelance writer who has been pitching her ideas to the media (and getting published) for several decades.  A professional journalist who just lately started blogging, she’ll share her advice and help you sort through a wide range of food and food allergy topics and media outlets where your talents can shine.

Breakout Session Leader:  Beth Hillson is a food writer, author and blogger.  She is the food editor for Gluten Free & More and writes and lectures frequently on the gluten-free diet and lifestyle as well as other special diet needs.  Beth was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1976 and attended culinary school where she learned to adapt classic recipes to fit her own diet.  In 1993 she founded one of the first gluten-free food companies, Gluten-Free Pantry.  She is the author of Gluten-Free Makeovers (Da Capo, 2011) and a newly-released gluten-free lifestyle book, Living Well Gluten-Free. Her work has appeared in many publications including the Huffington Post, Gothamist, GoDairyFree.com, The Daily Meal, Yoga International, Yankee Magazine, FamilyFun, and Connecticut Magazine, Houston Chronicle, Hartford Courant.  Her regular blogs about the gluten-free diet, lifestyle and recipes appear on Glutino.com and on her own blog www.glutenfreemakeovers.com .   You can follow Beth on Facebook and Twitter.

Breakout Session Details for #FABlogCon

If you have previewed this year’s #FABlogCon agenda- you will have noticed that Saturday Morning (September 27) there is a scheduled slot for Break-Out Sessions. There are actually 15 different sessions that will be available!  We thought these would be a fun ice-breaker to start off our informative presentations and for making friends with similar interests, or getting to know a presenter you admire.  Many of these sessions require pre-registration to participate. However,  you MUST have your ticket purchased, and your (Attendee Info 2014 form) filled out.  For  EVERYONE attending- (Including ALL our wonderful Speakers & Sponsors-) Please fill out this form ASAP! This will be used to create your name badge and conference registrations! One form for each attendee coming!

We will be opening up all break-out session that requires pre-registration on June 29th at 4:00 PM EST. These breakout sessions are a first come- first serve basis. Spaces ARE limited!!! We will begin releasing details over the next few weeks about each session so you can start thinking about which one you will want to attend!

#FABlogCon 2013 session

SPONSORS ONLY: There will be one session strictly for Sponsors- and informative “Business – to – Business” presentation about how to use and maximize social media to your advantage. Attendees must have a Sponsors lanyard to participate in this session. Details to come on “Maximizing Your Social ROI”

There are 3 sessions that will be open for anyone to attend- No pre-registration will be required.

There will be a  one-on-one blog audit with Annelies Zijderveld.  This will be a 10 minute conversation- with limited openings- pre-registration will be required- for a time slot between  8:00 am- 10:00 am  SIGN-UP FOR THESE 10-MINUTE SLOTS WILL BE DONE OUTSIDE OF SCHED. More details to come.

There are (6) one-hour sessions- from 9:15-10:15 that have LIMITED openings!  These sessions will require pre-registration to participate. 

There are (4) 30 minute sessions available- (4/4). These also have LIMITED openings! These will run from 9:15 – 9:45; and 9:45 – 10:15am.
