Hello, I’m Brynn Hadler, and I was not a blogger until I heard about the Food Allergy Blogger’s Conference. Because one of my children has multiple life threatening food allergies, I had followed and read the blogs of many of the attendees and speakers. Such fantastic people all gathered together? I knew I had to attend! But I couldn’t very well attend a blogger’s conference without being a blogger, right? #4  What is the best thing about food allergies?

The best thing about food allergies is that you can use them to amplify health. It’s such a great way to avoid so much of the junk that is peddled to children these days. Having a food allergy teaches children that being different is okay. Being different can make you even healthier than most people. And maybe, by having to be aware of food and food ingredients, it can be used as a catalyst to turn a child or adult down a path of healthy eating. With obesity, diabetes and other disease rates skyrocketing for both children and adults, having a food allergy may inadvertently help people – especially little people – avoid these other health issues.

#7 What other blogger would you most like to meet and why?

The blogger I’d most like to meet is Jessica Martin, the Food Allergy Sleuth. She is amazing!! When I read her “Getting Schooled” post deconstructing a scientific article on gut bacteria and food allergy, I felt like I’d discovered a kindred soul. I too, comb the scientific literature for clues to the food allergy puzzle, and I was over the moon to find another mother who did this. A unique and wonderful thing about Jessica is that she combines a gift of words with a strong scientific background to help explain complex jargon and concepts in a way that makes them understandable to everyone.

#10 If you didn’t have or deal with food allergies, what would be your 3 favorite foods to eat/try?

If I didn’t have to deal with food allergies, I would definitely fill my house with whole nuts in Autumn, eat coconuts and coconut-based dishes, and cook lots of Thai and Asian food with fresh prawns – mmmm! It would be so wonderful. But I can live without all that. Most of all, what I really want is for my son to not have to fear food. To be able to go anywhere and eat anything he wants and not have to fear for his precious and beautiful life.

4. What is the best thing about food allergies?
Living with food allergies can create a problem, but I find the challenge exciting. It is an opportunity to exercise my creativity and practice “kitchen chemistry”. Finding substitutions for eggs and dairy has been interesting to say the least. I find that cooking allergy free can be alot of fun!
 
5. What motivated you about blogging about food allergies?
My daughter was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy  when she was 4 then celiac disease at age of 7. As we have adjusted her diet (and our kitchen), I found others wanted to know what we were doing. So, my daughter and I naturally started a blog to discuss products, recipes, and how we travel gluten and peanut (and now dairy) free.
 
10.  If you didn’t have or deal with food allergies, what would be your 3 favorite foods to eat/try?
I actually enjoy eating allergy free. There are no foods I miss to the point of missing them. There is a time or two that I will smell something and it brings wonderful memories with it, but I am trying to re-create that trigger with the new foods we eat. I make killer cinnamon rolls and fry up eggplant like nobody’s business! All gluten, peanut, and dairy free!

1. Who do you look forward to seeing/meeting most at FABC and why?
I love connecting with people, especially those in the food allergy community. I know there is going to be a fabulous group in attendance, so I am really looking forward to meeting everyone (or at least as many people as possible)!

4. What is the best thing about food allergies?
The best thing about food allergies is that we eat a well-balanced and healthy diet.  Instead of defaulting to the typical american diet of unhealthy processed foods, we focus on eating whole foods.  I also feel that we are more in tune with our bodies and how food affects us, both positively and negatively. We focus on eating well and ejoying life, not mourning foods that make us ill.

5. What motivated you to start blogging about food allergies?
I created the Fantastically Free site because there is a huge gap between being diagnosed with a food allergy, being told to avoid certain foods, and actually living a safe, healthy, and happy life with food allergies.  My goal is to help people bridge that gap.

6. What is the best thing about the online food allergy community?
The best thing about the online food allergy community is the support.  Dealing with food allergies can feel very isolating sometimes, but it doesn’t have to be that way when you have a community.

10. If you didn’t have or deal with food allergies, what would be your 3 favorite foods to eat/try?
Despite having 3 kids with multiple food allergies and my own dietary restrictions, we don’t really long for any foods.  The 3 greatest things would be: (1) Not worrying about cross-contact (2) Going to baseball games without the peanut-free zone (3) Traveling with greater ease.

Kitchology at work

This is a typical work session for Kitchology in our offices in Maryland…
(I am the token female.)

My name is Iris Sherman. I am a food allergy advocate.  I am a busy mom plagued with food allergies. I have other family members with complicated dietary needs, including a rare case of Eosinophilic esophagitis. My desire to find solutions to issues related to food and food allergies led me to join forces with Dr. Alain Briancon to establish Kitchology. Kitchology is an early stage startup headquartered outside Washington DC. Our functional web site https://www.kitchology.com  Kitchology is a mobile/web platform that connects all household food activities for better nutrition, saving money and time.  Our focus is families with special dietary needs. I come from a background of bioscience/immunology. I used my understanding of the mechanism of protein adsorption to shape Kitchology. We have developed a unique “recipe science” technology we believe will make the food planning processes fun and efficient for families dealing with allergies. Now, it has led me to you.

1. Who do you look forward to seeing/meeting most at FABC and why?  I am most excited to meet as many people as possible at this event to compare and contrast stories, share resources, recipes and the like.  Alain, Jessica (one of our bloggers) and I can’t wait to meet the leaders meeting in Vegas.

4. What is the best thing about food allergies? Dealing with food allergies is a nutritional complexity which brings discipline to the food process. It has taught me patience, fortitude and most importantly compassion to make a difference for others.  My passion to helping families with allergies have led me to also to run for and be elected to the Institute of Food and Technology (IFT) governing board in DC.  IFT is a food science community of scientists and policy makers working to shape regulations and providing knowledge to make a difference.

6. What is the best thing about the online food allergy community?  I believe/we believe the food blogger community has a unique role to play in educating the broad population and letting them enjoy food activities more.  We have a blog (http://blog.kitchology.com), but our primary focus is providing tools for families to make a difference and amplify the voice of bloggers such as you through our mobile app. We want to also allow the food allergy bloggers to become “mobile”, so to speak through our mobile platforms under development.  We would like to invite any food allergy bloggers during the conference to give us a brief amount of their time on video in a private session to capture their personal journey, experiences and reflections as well as get candid reaction to our Kitchology ideas.  Nothing fancy, just a video camera and a couple of mikes, and tokens of our appreciation.

about_Allergy_Free_KitchensMy name is Wendy Lazor.  I’m a six year veteran of managing multiple food allergies and a writer at heart.  My blog,allergyfreekitchens.com, was born out of a desire to be an encourager and a help to others learning to live the free life.

What is the best thing about food allergies?  We eat more whole foods and most of our treats are healthier than their allergen-laden counterparts.  Seriously, before I ditched dairy I never would have thought a serving of ice cream could satisfy 24% of my daily fiber intake. 😉

What motivated you to start blogging about food allergies?  Compassion.  Some handle their child’s food-allergy diagnosis with poise and confidence.  I did not.  I worried.  I was anxious.  I tried to put on a good front, but inside I was a mess.  Over time, that took its toll and I had no choice but to learn how to live free from fear.  I’m on the other side of it now, but those experiences stirred a compassion in me to encourage others who may find themselves where I once was – afraid.  Yes, it is possible to enjoythe free life!

What is the best thing about the online food allergy community?  Variety.  I am grateful for the various personalities and approaches people have to living with food allergies.  You can’t help but find someone who relates to what you’re experiencing.  There’s great comfort in that.

daniella knellI am a food allergy advocate, educator and blogger. My site is Smart Allergy Friendly Education  My first passion is in the classroom with children and adults.  I have come to realize our youth are much less fearful of having friends with food allergies than their parents.  Also, the network of support we can create for our children is life lasting.  You can also find me presenting resource awareness classes for parents new to managing food allergies. Having traveled this journey alone for a long time, my goal is to ease the stress for those following behind me.  All of these opportunities led to my passion for product and motivational blogging.  I am ecstatic to be joining so many other inspirational women and men at this Food Allergy Blogger Conference .

1. Who do you look forward to seeing/meeting most at FABC and why?

After 3 1/2 years of blogging, it’s hard to choose just one attendee I’d like to meet, as I feel I already have so many ‘friends’ in the crowd.  I am incredibly excited to meet Jenny and Homa, the organizers of this event.  It is their personal passions which have created this opportunity for so many of us like minded entrepreneurs, mompreneurs and community shakers to meet.

2. Which of your blog posts are you most proud of and why?

I present a lot of ‘product reviews’ and am most proud of the editorials I write which are carried through other food allergy channels.  My goal is to be realistic yet encouraging through my writings.  I get frustrated with those who prey on the fear of living with food allergies.  My motivational spirit is to let others know they truly can live life fully. Two of my favorites are: Vacationing Without Your Food Allergic Kids  carried by Rudi’s Gluten Free Bakery and No Nuts Moms Group , & the following article carried with different titles:  Nut-less and Grateful with  AllergyKids, and Keeping Nuts Out of the Classroom with Rudis Gluten Free Bakery

3. Which panel topic do you look forward to hearing most and why?

I am very much looking forward to ‘Honest Pay-Monetizing Your Passion’.  Blogging has been an incredible outlet for me, but is just a small part of MY passion.  With the right sponsorships, I believe I can take my personal writing and 15 years of motivational public speaking skills to another level.  Along with my SAFE food allergy labels, I have several ideas in mind and need just a little help in focusing on how to move forward.
4. What is the best thing about food allergies?

The best thing about living with food allergies is that my children have enabled me to be a better mom.  I always knew I wanted to make a difference in others lives.. I just didn’t know how.  They focused me.  My children are incredibly compassionate individuals because they understand what it’s like to ‘feel different’. At their young ages of 8 and 10, they have been speaking publicly to their peers about their ood allergies since they were both in pre-school.

5. What motivated you to start blogging about food allergies?

What motivated me to start blogging was that I was so tired I finding hidden ingredients in products I least expected.  My very first blog was about Crayola Dropz.  I was so surprised to find their was lactic acid in this product.  My son had rubbed it all over his hands while having fun in the tub.  Next thing we knew, he was freaking out because of the itching and hives.  That very week I begun my blog! And here I am three and half years later going to my first blogger conference ever!  My dream is to NOT just attend, but to be one of the ones inspiring those around us!

I have a changing relationship with punctuation marks and capitalization.  In October 2011 I self-diagnosed with Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, and in January 2012 I stopped consuming milk products on a daily and/or weekly basis. I was briefly vegan, but found it was not the ideal diet for my body. I don’t believe in telling others what to eat, but simply want to share what works for me.

My post about scanning my old photographs led me to examine my journey to the gluten-free life.

Blogging about my gluten-free life, has led me to experimenting in the kitchen and slowly developing my own recipes.  I am looking forward to The Art of Recipe Development. 
 
4. What is the best thing about food allergies?
Being gluten-free has required me to become more assertive. I now feel more comfortable asserting myself on non-food related subjects and having confidence in my opinions. 

5. What motivated you to start blogging about food allergies?
Once I became more open about living gluten-free, friends and friends of friends began asking me for resources.  The blog began as a way to keep a list of these resources and led to random posts about my life with food intolerance.

6. What is the best thing about the online food allergy community?
On days when living gluten-free becomes a massive hassle, it is great to read about others dealing with similar issues.

10. If you didn’t have or deal with food allergies, what would be your 3 favorite foods to eat/try?

Honestly, I do not have an answer to this question as living gluten-free has actually led to a diversification of my diet.

1. Who do you look forward to seeing/meeting most at FABC and why?

I have owned Alyssa Fleming’s book, “Go Dairy Free”, for several years. It’s full of incredible recipes. I have introduced several nutrition clients to her book and her website as a helpful resource. I think she did a great job with both! I am very inspired by her story and all she has created out of it for herself. I am very excited to learn more from her!!!

4. What is the best thing about food allergies?

I would have to say that the best thing about food allergies is being inspired to change the way you eat and rediscovering food in a whole new way. As a Holistic Health Coach, I enjoy helping my clients discover new foods and get excited about food again. Inspiring them to eat healthier by making it fun and exciting is always my goal.

7. What other blogger would you most like to meet and why?

I would have to say, Blender Girl. I absolutely understand her love for her Vitamix, since I’ve been devoted to mine for the past 8 years. I remember it took me at least 3 years before I would allow myself to part with that kind of money, for what many think is just a blender, but it is so much more than that! I use mine at least once a day, so it has certainly earned it’s keep! I too feel that food is my medicine and I can relate to her story. I have so much respect for her and I find her to be such an inspiration!

10. If you didn’t have or deal with food allergies, what would be your 3 favorite foods to eat/try?

Homemade macaroni and cheese
Swiss fondue
Baked brie in a phyllo dough w/ fresh fruit slices
